Prior to development, we spent some time working with the YHODA team to scope out the 

 and gain a better understanding of how they envisioned it would be used by users. We had a mix of online chats, calls, and in-person meetings where we discussed the scope, drilling into the details of each requirement and working out how necessary they were to the core user experience. Through these discussions, we ended up with a smaller, much more refined scope.

The scope

Shortly after defining the scope, we met with a designer from the University of Sheffield Print and Creative Service, who had been commissioned to design the website. We had some initial discussions with him, ensuring we were on the same page about the functionality of the website, and coordinating on the priority of different parts of the design. Soon after, we were provided with fantastic designs for the website, allowing us to kick off the development phase.

Design Collaboration

Before getting into the development phase, it’s important to understand what a Power BI Dashboard is. Microsoft Power BI is a data visualisation platform that allows people to present complicated data in a visually appealing, easy-to-understand format. Power BI provides dashboard admins with lots of options for data visualisation and organisation, which makes it a good fit to showcase the data in the Yorkshire Vitality Index.

What is a Power BI Dashboard?

We decided that it would be best to develop the Yorkshire Engagement Portal using a headless content management system, so that we had full creative freedom when developing the front end, while also giving YHODA the ability to edit and update the website as time went on. We decided to branch out and use Payload, which we had not used before.

The Payload page builder uses blocks when building pages, so we went over the designs and split the different pages up into blocks, which we then grouped according to shared functionality. This gave us a full list of the components we would need to implement to allow one of the website’s content editors to create and edit the website to their heart's content.

We implemented these blocks in payload, using React and Next.js to build the front end, and having the designs in Figma made it simple to lift visual components from the design to implement on the website.

To embed the Power BI dashboards, we created a Power BI Dashboard block that lets a content editor simply put in the URL of the dashboard, and then the dashboard will appear and be usable on the page where the block has been used. This gives YHODA full control over the dashboards on the website, and makes adding, updating, or deleting dashboards very simple.

Technology

As we reached the end of the development phase, we prepared a training document for the YHODA team and handed the website over to them fully completed. To mark the end of this phase, we attended a soft launch event, held at the University of Sheffield, where real users got a chance to get their hands on the Yorkshire Engagement Portal and give their feedback.

We believe that this portal has massive potential to help inform key decision makers and impact policy that affects our day-to-day lives by providing easy access to vital data. We really enjoyed working on this project, and we are thrilled to have played even a small part in promoting the visibility and accessibility of this vital data.

Yorkshire Engagement Portal

Digital Catapult, in collaboration with Knowle West Media Centre and Nature Nurture

The Design to Deliver programme was collaboratively created by Digital Catapult, Connected Places Catapult, and Satellite Applications Catapult; three connected organisations that seek to accelerate innovation within their respective fields.

Its goal? To unite UK-based SMEs with design consultancies and local community partners to create innovative, user-centred solutions to some of the UK’s biggest challenges.

We worked specifically with Digital Catapult, and their challenge was: Informed choices for nature-positive actions - How can you develop a solution leveraging existing data, to help citizens be better informed to make nature-conscious decisions?

Hive IT was chosen to partner with Reading-based SME Nature Nurture, a creative SME, on the development of an operational prototype of their immersive nature experience. Their project was called ‘Web of Life Quest’. Our work was to guide Nature Nurture through a human-centred design process to develop the Web of Life Quest from a concept to a user-tested digital and physical experience that encourages nature-positive behaviour.

The programme

We initially met with Digital Catapult in late 2024 to introduce ourselves and gain deeper insight into the format of the challenge. Here, we got to know the team that we would be working with on this project, and how we would all contribute to the project’s success. On the team were:

 - a London-based deep technology innovation organisation that wants to utilise the unique ideas and talents of Small / Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to tackle some of the UK's biggest challenges. Their role was to give us guidance and assistance, connect us with experts in design and technology, and monitor everyone's progress throughout the process.

 - our role was to provide design expertise and to help two Small / Medium Enterprises (SME, providing user research, design approach, user testing and digital implementation.

 - KWMC is an arts and technology centre and charity located in Knowle West, Bristol. It uses the arts and technology to help support people in making positive changes in their lives and communities. They provided local user group contacts and supported research activity.

Meeting the team

Shortly after meeting everyone, we got the opportunity to learn more about the SME’s that got shortlisted for the programme and ask questions / provide feedback that would help Digital Catapult in choosing the SME’s and allocating them to the appropriate design consultancies. The two SME’s that were chosen to work with us were:

 - A Bristol-based SME that creates live theatre shows and immersive experiences that explores life on a changing planet, and finds new ways of touring shows inspired by how nature moves.

a creative social enterprise rooted in nature and wellbeing, whose mission is to enhance the mental and physical wellbeing of our diverse communities by engaging and connecting them with the parks, woodlands and waterways on their doorstep.

This case study is about the work we did with Nature Nurture and their project, 

Sme selection

The Web of Life Quest is an immersive and dynamic sonic quest, guiding people through the Web of Life using physical waymarkers, featuring plant and animal characters inspired by the local ecology in a gamified context.

The aim of the game is to create an ecosystem healthy enough to attract and keep the apex predator within the respective food web, by answering multiple-choice questions for each species and getting more or less ‘eco health points’ depending on the choice you make.

Our job was to take Nature Nurture from its initial conception phase through the design thinking process to end up with a working prototype that was validated by and tailored to user needs.

What is the Web of Life Quest

This was always about designing with people, not just for them. That started on day one with a collaborative kick-off in London arranged by Digital Catapult, followed by three agile sprints across research, prototyping and testing.

It was a brilliant chance to meet not only the SME’s we would be working with, but also the other design consultancies and location partners, as well as the team from the various Catapults.

After presentations and a Q&A on the programme, everyone split out into their respective teams to get to know each other a little better. We had prepared a workshop for our team to get a head start on the design thinking process for Nature Nurture’s idea.

In the week following the kick-off off we worked as a team to create our project plan, which was the first output required by Digital Catapult. This plan laid out the activities we planned to do during each of our 3-week sprints, the outputs we hoped to achieve, and the risks and dependencies associated.

Although we knew that the nature of the design thinking process meant that our plan would have to be flexible, it was useful to have this document as our reference point and guide.

Kickoff

Involving the local community was at the heart of this project and key to the success of the prototype, so it was really important for this to be a consistent focus throughout the whole process.

Using Knowle West Media Centre’s already cemented relationships with the community, we were able to create an engagement plan with various local groups, including:

The ‘We are More’ (part of KWMC) after-school parent and child allotment group

‘Creative hub’, a creative youth group based at KWMC

SoundWaves and SoundWaves+, youth music groups based at KWMC

The ‘Eco warrior’ group at the local Oasis Connaught Junior school

It was important for us to approach the engagement sensitively; many of these groups had false promises from other external organisations about new and exciting projects and were therefore understandably mistrustful. Luckily, Nature Nurture had lots of experience in building trusting relationships with other communities from their previous work, so all engagements were successful and incredibly helpful in informing the project.

Each iteration of the Web of Life game was informed and tested by the groups we were engaging with; after each community group session, the core project team would get together to consolidate and analyse all of the feedback received.

We also engaged with some individuals based at Knowle West, including a local tree expert and a member of the Digital Projects and IT team. Lewis, from the digital projects team, was able to give us some helpful insight into the digital literacy and habits of the area, such as people being wary of needing to input their details into a platform, and the fact that whilst most people have their own mobile device, many don’t own their own desktop device. This was invaluable when it came to us making decisions on the digital direction of the project.

Community engagement, testing and co-creation

We knew from the beginning that for the ‘Web of Life Quest’ to be successful, it would need to be not only entertaining and informative, but also a compelling and enjoyable game that was interesting but not over-complicated; striking a balance was going to be tricky!

Part of the programme offering from Digital Catapult was time with some of their experts across various fields. We were lucky enough to work with 

, one of Digital Catapult's lead technologists and a gameplay expert! Aki led us through the basics of creating our game player loop for the Web of Life Quest, considering rules, resources, stimuli and feedback.

By referring back to this loop after each user engagement session, we were able to analyse the feedback, iterate on the gameplay and test the results on an almost daily basis.

For this trial, we had decided to focus primarily on creating a human prototype for the game, due to time and budget constraints, but we had all agreed that a nice stretch goal would be to develop a digital game in its basic form. This proved to be one of the biggest challenges of the project: creating a game that would work in this hybrid way.

Gameplay

As with everything in this project, all of the designs were a collaborative effort between Hive, Nature Nurture, and various other partners and connections. Hive created a prototype interface to support the gameplay using the beautiful species images created by 

, a Reading-based artist and friend of Nature Nurture, integrating the soundscapes created by Richard from 

Design

We knew that we’d be limited when it came to the digital offering for this game due to the time and budget constraints of the programme, but we agreed that we wanted to design, develop and test a proof of concept to show that a technical solution was feasible and usable, using a subset of the gameplay and sound recordings.

So for this workstream, we investigated the technology available to the audience, their access to mobile data and the connectivity available in the potential trail locations.

We decided to build a Progressive Web App (PWA); a type of web application that delivers a native app experience, using web technologies. Users can add them to their home screen, like native apps, but without having to go through an app store or download process. They can cache data, allowing offline access (key to the remote locations that might house the Web of Life Quest), are fast and responsive, have cross-browser compatibility and are easily searchable on the web.

One of the primary goals of the Web of Life Quest is to educate people about various species of plants and animals in their local area. By doing so, participants can better understand their roles within the ecosystem and recognise how their decisions impact the environment as a whole.

Therefore, a deeper understanding of the local ecology was vital to the project, as it’s a huge part of what the platform communicates to its users.

, an ecologist and partner of Nature Nurture. Teresa taught us about ecology and biodiversity, which meant the whole team had a much better understanding of what we were creating. She spent time researching the biodiversity of the Northern Slopes, carrying out an ecological site survey. She spoke with local conservation groups, worked with Bristol City Council to get species data and provided us with the final list of species to use for the Web of Life Quest.

The ecology work informed another important aspect of the project: 

, who is another partner of Nature Nurture.

A Noisy Silence uses “sound and listening as a vehicle for supporting wellbeing, building community and caring for our environment”. Richard and his team captured species-specific recordings and worked with local youth groups at Knowle West Media Centre to build immersive soundscapes. From buzzing bees to flapping wings, sound became a key part of the user journey.

Ecology

Knowle West Media Centre hosted a wonderful end-of-project showcase at the end of the 3 sprints, so that the cohort could all come back together to show our work, share our stories and experiences of the programme, and celebrate the end of an intense and successful journey!

Each team presented their work; Nature Nurture had a brilliant video produced to show the journey we’d been on with the Web of Life Quest, and it was very well received by the other teams.

We all then walked together to the Northern Slopes ‘Springfield Allotment’ where we were able to set up the Web of Life Quest and invite the other teams to play the game, using the PWA on our phones, playing the audio through a speaker, and following the physical posts around the allotment. We got some really helpful feedback from our final chance at a user feedback session; people felt the questions and choices presented were at the right level, they enjoyed learning about our impact on the various species, and thought that it was well-suited for the 8-14 age group we were aiming for.

The Results

At Hive IT, we believe in digital for social good. Projects like this let us flex our design skills while working towards something much bigger. For example, stronger communities, deeper nature connection and inclusive access to technology.

We truly loved so many things about this project, from learning new things about ecology and how species interconnect, working so closely with a wonderful and diverse group of people with so many different skill sets and having the opportunity to step away from our computers and get into nature.

By working together in partnership, staying humble and listening closely, we helped turn a brilliant idea into something real. And we had a lot of fun doing it.

It was such a worthwhile cause knowing that the work that Nature Nurture does can have a significant impact on our green spaces and the health and well-being of children around the country.

Hive IT was chosen to partner with Bristol-based SME Mechanimal, a creative SME, on the development of an operational prototype of their immersive nature experience. Their project was called ‘Deepwood’. Our work was to guide Mechanimal through a human-centred design process to develop Deepwood from a concept to a user-tested digital and physical experience that encourages nature-positive behaviour.

The Programme

 - our role was to provide design expertise and to help two Small / Medium Enterprises (SME), providing user research, design approach, user testing and digital implementation.

 - A Bristol-based SME that creates live theatre shows and immersive experiences that explore life on a changing planet, and finds new ways of touring shows inspired by how nature moves.

 - a creative social enterprise rooted in nature and wellbeing, whose mission is to enhance the mental and physical wellbeing of our diverse communities by engaging and connecting them with the parks, woodlands and waterways on their doorstep.

This case study is about the work we did with Mechanimal and their project, 

SME Selection

Deepwood is a nature-based immersive experience powered by real-time tree data. Biosensors are attached to a tree to record live data (such as soil moisture and bark conductivity), which is then turned into a live audio experience that changes as the data changes. It’s designed to slow people down, invite reflection and to strengthen our relationship with the ecosystems around us. Our job was to take Deepwood from its current phase through the design thinking process to end up with a working prototype that was tailored to user needs.

What is Deepwood?

We officially kicked off the project by heading down to London to meet with Digital Catapult, Knowle West Media Centre, and Mechanimal for a kick-off day, where we heard more about the program structure, listened to some inspirational talks, and learned about the different design consultancies, location partners, and SMEs on the programme.

We then broke out into our teams for a workshop. This allowed us to discuss programme structure, objectives, expectations and a formal introduction to all teams was agreed. This session was very beneficial to the project as it helped us:

Set roles and responsibilities on the project

Help us understand and clarify Mechanimal’s vision for ‘Deepwood’

Helped us to understand and define key risks and assumptions

Co-create a three-month engagement delivery roadmap for the next three sprints.

Collaborating with Mechanimal on their project ‘Deepwood’, we had to discover who ‘Deepwood’ was for and who their target audience was to help them clarify a more focused user-centred design process.

To do this, we facilitated a series of impact mapping workshops and behavioural archetype exercises. By doing these important exercises, we were able to identify potential stakeholder groups, their motivations, and prioritise the most relevant user types for this particular project.

From these exercises, we had two lead archetypes, which we named:

 Local residents who are open to trying new art and tech within their local community.

 Individuals seeking therapeutic, nature-based experiences.

These exercises were an important process in helping Mechanimal understand its target users. Archetypes are about behaviours, the why behind people’s decisions. They give us a zoomed-out view of shared motivations and patterns across a community. 

Mini Discovery

With the support of KWMC, we reached out directly to Bristol residents and community members to conduct interviews and gather insights for developing the Deepwood prototype. Our focus was to:

Learn about the barriers to engaging with nature

Find out the appeal of immersive, nature-based technology

Identify any community spaces of interest for the development of the prototype

We created tailored questions focused on our two priority user groups to understand how they currently interact with nature, the barriers they face and their desires for an audio experience related to nature.

One of the key insights we discovered was the strong connection that people felt towards Springfield Allotments, where a community group has formed. Given the dedicated group using the allotments and the safety of the enclosed space, we decided it would be the perfect place to set up the prototype.

At the same time, we moved into the user testing part of the project by organising two face-to-face user engagement sessions. This was done using a basic version of Deepwood, which included just one audio track to get initial feedback from the community participants. In the first session, we were able to experiment with the use of narrative prompts during the user testing. For example, “Point out one unexpected thing that you see on the tree”, and “Move your body into the shape of the tree”. We were able to observe participants' reactions to these prompts to help refine the development of the project.

Interviews and Testing

Session two of the user testing moved towards a mid-level prototype experience, which drew from real-time sensor data from trees. The audio component of Deepwood had significantly improved since the first user session. This allowed users to listen to audio from various biosensors (controlled by Deepwood’s sound designer) around a Hawthorn tree at the Springfield Allotments, whilst Tom Bailey, from Mechanimal, described their experience.

From these user engagement sessions, we were able to take notes on participants' reactions to the sounds and held feedback sessions to provide Mechanimal with insights to further refine the project.

Mechanimal then conducted two additional rounds of testing to continue enhancing the experience of the prototype.

We wanted Deepwood to be accessible for everyone, and to reach and impact as many people as it could, influencing them to have a better impact on nature, but we did not want to limit that impact to the few people lucky enough to try the in person experience, so we decided to explore the possibility of a Deepwood website.

Mechanimal wanted the website to be enticing to investors by describing the project and how they can get involved, while also offering an online experience in the form of a 3D soundscape based around a virtual 3D tree, which we created in Three.js.

Over three weeks, we rapidly spun up a Deepwood website. Mechanimal provided us with designs, and we created the front end using React, giving us the flexibility to easily add a 3D image and soundscape to the website, which we hooked up to Mechanimal’s existing WordPress instance via the WordPress API. We did this so that Mechanimal could update the content of the Deepwood website using the same WordPress interface they were used to.

Despite the short timescales, the resulting website met the requirements and gave Mechanimal a solid way to entice both investors and regular users to engage with Deepwood.

Website development

As the project came to an end, we attended a showcase at Knowle West Media Centre to share all of the work we had done and see what the other SME’s and their teams had been getting up to over the last three months. We also got the chance to show off the final version of Deepwood (so far), with fully spatialised audio, which was completed by Mechanimal. Deepwood was a hit, and so many people signed up to use it that Mechanimal needed to offer more sessions than planned. It got overwhelmingly positive feedback from everyone who used it, with users saying that they didn’t want to leave the experience.

We really enjoyed getting the opportunity to work on this project, and we valued the challenge of trying to employ the full design thinking process in such a short amount of time, which has shaped how we will go about the design thinking process in future projects.

It was a pleasure to work with Digital Catapult, Knowle West Media Centre, and Mechanimal on this project, and we’re incredibly grateful for their involvement and support. It was also fantastic to engage with so many real users throughout Knowle West, whose contributions and comments were essential to the delivery of this project.

Deepwood: A Sensory Tree Experience

MetalloBio

Our first step was understanding how to build 

 new redesigned website and foundations as an organisation. We started with an Impact Mapping session, a collaborative exercise that distilled the company’s goals and challenges into clear actionable insights for the website. This allowed us to answer critical questions:

Who are the key stakeholders in achieving this mission?

What behaviours or actions do we need to encourage?

This map didn’t just outline a strategy, it offered a lens through which we could prioritise content, identify user needs, and design a website structure that made sense. From here, we created a sitemap to visualise the flow of content, balancing accessibility with engagement. This structured foundation allowed us to design efficiently, ensuring every page had purpose and clarity.

Discovering MetalloBio’s brand ambition and identity

Through branding workshops, we dove deeper into MetalloBio’s identity. These sessions weren’t just about aesthetics; they were about uncovering the heart of the organisation - what drives them, how they want to be seen, and the impact they hope to achieve.

Through the use of different branding activities, we encouraged divergent thinking to uncover fresh perspectives. These exercises helped define MetalloBio’s ambition as a company that combines groundbreaking innovation with approachable expertise, challenging the norms of the pharmaceutical industry.

From these insights, we developed a brand foundation document - a guide that distilled their mission (“Driving out life-threatening infections with radical antibiotic solutions”), values (resilience, collaboration, excellence), and tone of voice (confident yet approachable, thoughtful yet purposeful). This document became a cornerstone for all design and communication efforts.

The aim of the branding work was never to start again from scratch, but instead the focus was building on top of and being sympathetic to the current logo, styles and colours to respect and pay tribute to the legacy of Dr Kirsty Smitten (MetalloBio’s co-founder), who sadly died from serial lung infections following treatment for the rare and aggressive cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma.

Building on their established aesthetic, we updated their visual assets to reflect their modern, confident, and innovative personality.

 - Adjustments ensured greater versatility across digital and print.

 - These elements balanced professionalism with a modern edge, emphasising clarity and approachability.

 - From slide templates to letterheads and business cards, each piece was designed to reflect MetalloBio’s credibility and innovation.

These assets were packaged and organised for convenient use, ensuring that any future collaborators can maintain their visual identity and language consistently while allowing flexibility.

We ensured that the site wasn’t just visually compelling but also a platform to amplify their mission. The design needed to embody their “groundbreaking yet grounded” approach, using clean lines, calming colours, and bold accents to convey not only confidence but urgency.

Branding and Design

We worked closely with MetalloBio to develop an effective and engaging website architecture. This was done by working with them to develop a content structure that informed the new website design. Each layout highlights MetalloBio’s three pillars of innovation, awareness, and advocacy while ensuring easy navigation for diverse audiences.

The website features and improvements had to appeal to their target audiences which were investors, partners as well as the general public with an interest in antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Our Head of Creative, Allan, gathered all the relevant information to create fresh design templates that are modern, user-friendly and that better communicate MetalloBio’s work.

We helped transition MetalloBio from their old SquareSpace Content Management System (CMS), which restricted them by having limited features and functionality to WebFlow. WebFlow has a combined design tool and CMS which reduces the time we can design and develop a site, whilst still producing a high-quality product that is responsive and accessible.

By choosing this CMS for MetalloBio they will gain various benefits and free them from previous limitations. For example,

A user-friendly experience that simplifies the design process.

Freedom to create a website without being tied to a template, allowing them to differentiate themselves from competitors.

The capability to concept and build all within one system, enabling rapid development and adaptability to change.

An integrated responsive design feature which ensures minimal development work, means the new site will be responsive across the latest mobile and tablet devices.

Website Redesign

Webflow allowed us a quick and easy way to transform design concepts into a fully functional and content-managed website. It includes:

 - Giving MetalloBio the ability to manage blog posts, case studies, and other content independently, reducing reliance on developer or designer input.

 - A quick way to ensure that the site works across devices, providing a consistent experience for users.

Miro: Facilitation Workshops and Ideation

Miro was the backbone of our discovery and collaboration workshops. This tool helped us:

 - Using digital whiteboards, we developed ideas and mapped out concepts such as impact maps and audience personas.

- Helped with interactive exercises like card sorting and branding analogies, which allowed us to keep sessions dynamic and inclusive.

 - All workshop insights were captured in one place, making it easy to reference and build upon as the project progressed.

Adobe Illustrator: Refining the brand identity

Adobe Illustrator was essential for crafting and fine-tuning MetalloBio’s visual assets. We:

 - Made adjustments to ensure scalability and readability across digital and print mediums

 - Created high-quality graphics and icons that aligned with the updated brand foundation

 - Designed professional slide decks, letterheads, and business cards to ensure MetalloBio’s branding remained consistent across all channels.

We worked with the Hive IT team for several weeks on this project, even before the creative work started. For us, the company website is many different things: an absolutely core part of our web presence; our front of house (for many, our website is their first encounter with MetalloBio); a conduit for MetalloBio news flow and updates; a shop window for investors and potential commercial partners, and, in time, an educational resource aligned with our mission to improve the prospects for patients with untreatable infections. It is no accident that the website Hive IT built delivers these attributes. They comprehensively drilled down into every detail and nuance of what we were seeking to achieve. This takes time and focus. They ran the information-gathering sessions superbly. At times, it was not abundantly apparent where all the strands of questioning were going: the questions in isolation made sense, but how could they possibly lead to a cogent and neatly structured website that would meet our expectations and needs? This is part of the Hive IT magic. They were able to draw it all together. It suddenly made complete sense. The result, we believe is truly excellent. But it took our full commitment to the process, and our willingness to surrender to the Hive IT approach. It was worth it. Really, very well worth it.
