MetalloBio

Our first step was understanding how to build MetalloBio’s new redesigned website and foundations as an organisation. We started with an Impact Mapping session, a collaborative exercise that distilled the company’s goals and challenges into clear actionable insights for the website. This allowed us to answer critical questions:

Who are the key stakeholders in achieving this mission?

What behaviours or actions do we need to encourage?

This map didn’t just outline a strategy, it offered a lens through which we could prioritise content, identify user needs, and design a website structure that made sense. From here, we created a sitemap to visualise the flow of content, balancing accessibility with engagement. This structured foundation allowed us to design efficiently, ensuring every page had purpose and clarity.

Discovering MetalloBio’s brand ambition and identity

Through branding workshops, we dove deeper into MetalloBio’s identity. These sessions weren’t just about aesthetics; they were about uncovering the heart of the organisation - what drives them, how they want to be seen, and the impact they hope to achieve.

Through the use of different branding activities, we encouraged divergent thinking to uncover fresh perspectives. These exercises helped define MetalloBio’s ambition as a company that combines groundbreaking innovation with approachable expertise, challenging the norms of the pharmaceutical industry.

From these insights, we developed a brand foundation document - a guide that distilled their mission (“Driving out life-threatening infections with radical antibiotic solutions”), values (resilience, collaboration, excellence), and tone of voice (confident yet approachable, thoughtful yet purposeful). This document became a cornerstone for all design and communication efforts.

The aim of the branding work was never to start again from scratch, but instead the focus was building on top of and being sympathetic to the current logo, styles and colours to respect and pay tribute to the legacy of Dr Kirsty Smitten (MetalloBio’s co-founder), who sadly died from serial lung infections following treatment for the rare and aggressive cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma.

Building on their established aesthetic, we updated their visual assets to reflect their modern, confident, and innovative personality.

 - Adjustments ensured greater versatility across digital and print.

 - These elements balanced professionalism with a modern edge, emphasising clarity and approachability.

 - From slide templates to letterheads and business cards, each piece was designed to reflect MetalloBio’s credibility and innovation.

These assets were packaged and organised for convenient use, ensuring that any future collaborators can maintain their visual identity and language consistently while allowing flexibility.

We ensured that the site wasn’t just visually compelling but also a platform to amplify their mission. The design needed to embody their “groundbreaking yet grounded” approach, using clean lines, calming colours, and bold accents to convey not only confidence but urgency.

Branding and Design

We worked closely with MetalloBio to develop an effective and engaging website architecture. This was done by working with them to develop a content structure that informed the new website design. Each layout highlights MetalloBio’s three pillars of innovation, awareness, and advocacy while ensuring easy navigation for diverse audiences.

The website features and improvements had to appeal to their target audiences which were investors, partners as well as the general public with an interest in antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Our Head of Creative, Allan, gathered all the relevant information to create fresh design templates that are modern, user-friendly and that better communicate MetalloBio’s work.

We helped transition MetalloBio from their old SquareSpace Content Management System (CMS), which restricted them by having limited features and functionality to WebFlow. WebFlow has a combined design tool and CMS which reduces the time we can design and develop a site, whilst still producing a high-quality product that is responsive and accessible.

By choosing this CMS for MetalloBio they will gain various benefits and free them from previous limitations. For example,

Freedom to create a website without being tied to a template, allowing them to differentiate themselves from competitors.

Website Redesign

Webflow allowed us a quick and easy way to transform design concepts into a fully functional and content-managed website. It includes:

 - Giving MetalloBio the ability to manage blog posts, case studies, and other content independently, reducing reliance on developer or designer input.

 - A quick way to ensure that the site works across devices, providing a consistent experience for users.

Miro: Facilitation Workshops and Ideation

Miro was the backbone of our discovery and collaboration workshops. This tool helped us:

 - Using digital whiteboards, we developed ideas and mapped out concepts such as impact maps and audience personas.

- Helped with interactive exercises like card sorting and branding analogies, which allowed us to keep sessions dynamic and inclusive.

 - All workshop insights were captured in one place, making it easy to reference and build upon as the project progressed.

Adobe Illustrator: refining the brand identity

Adobe Illustrator was essential for crafting and fine-tuning MetalloBio’s visual assets. We:

 - Made adjustments to ensure scalability and readability across digital and print mediums

 - created high-quality graphics and icons that aligned with the updated brand foundation

 - Designed professional slide decks, letterheads, and business cards to ensure MetalloBio’s branding remained consistent across all channels.

We worked with the Hive IT team for several weeks on this project, even before the creative work started. For us, the company website is many different things: an absolutely core part of our web presence; our front of house (for many, our website is their first encounter with MetalloBio); a conduit for MetalloBio news flow and updates; a shop window for investors and potential commercial partners, and, in time, an educational resource aligned with our mission to improve the prospects for patients with untreatable infections. It is no accident that the website Hive IT built delivers these attributes. They comprehensively drilled down into every detail and nuance of what we were seeking to achieve. This takes time and focus. They ran the information-gathering sessions superbly. At times, it was not abundantly apparent where all the strands of questioning were going: the questions in isolation made sense, but how could they possibly lead to a cogent and neatly structured website that would meet our expectations and needs? This is part of the Hive IT magic. They were able to draw it all together. It suddenly made complete sense. The result, we believe is truly excellent. But it took our full commitment to the process, and our willingness to surrender to the Hive IT approach. It was worth it. Really, very well worth it.

South Yorkshire Refugee Law & Justice

We began by updating SYRLJ’s branding, focusing on creating a new logo and colour scheme. The redesigned branding elements helped establish a stronger brand identity for SYRLJ, enabling them to connect with their audience more effectively. By incorporating feedback and following an iterative design process, we were able to create a final design that resonated with SYRLJ’s values and mission.

Having discussed the needs of SYRLJ, we recommended migrating their site from Wordpress to Webflow, a platform that offered a more user-friendly content management experience. This transition allowed SYRLJ to overcome the limitation of template-based websites and create a unique, visually appealing, and highly customisable website.

The new site architecture and intuitive editing capability of Webflow allows SYRLJ to update and manage their content effortlessly, resulting in a more engaging user experience.

The website redevelopment process included building pages and the site architecture within Webflow, thorough cross-browser and device testing, and incorporating feedback from internal testing.

SYRLJ was involved throughout the process, ensuring their requirements were met and their vision for the website was realised. By leveraging Webflow’s responsive capability, the new website ensured a seamless user experience across various devices.

We started the project with a lean discovery workshop to understand and explore:

Our discovery workshop with The Eagles Foundation really helped us get clear on the vision for the website and helped to inform our next steps.

Discovery Workshop

Using branding exercises throughout the discovery phase, we gained a deeper understanding of what The Eagles Foundation envisioned for the site.

We learned that they wanted a classic style with a twist, nostalgic and comforting like Dr.Pepper. A look that said sporty, but with class, half way between a golf outfit and Gareth Southgate’s Waist Coat.

We carried out live editing over Zoom so that we could try out different styles, with our designer quickly making changes in Adobe XD.

Design

As The Eagles Foundation required a website that could be easily customised, managed and updated - we agreed to use Sanity.io as a headless Content Management System.

We used React for the front end and hosted the site on Vercel. As the site contains a large amount of data which needs to be easily searched, filtered and surfaced, we implemented the Algolia search tool to help users easily find the information they are looking for.

It was also important to us and The Eagles Foundation that the site would be very accessible. Throughout the design and development phases, we built with the end-user in mind, ensuring that the site would meet the current Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

It has been a real pleasure working with the very friendly people at The Eagles Foundation throughout this project. We provided a training session to help the team better understand how to update and manage the site through the content management system that we built.

We Are With You

In this phase, we worked with Thrive by Design to conduct research and co-creation workshops with potential users and mental health professionals. These workshops helped us create sketches for the prototype allowing us to better understand the concept and benefits of the toolkit and the features that users would like to have available.

Before running the workshops, we engaged with attendees to understand any access needs, and to set the right conditions for the workshops - ensuring they would be inclusive, accessible and comfortable for those joining.

With awareness of how mental health can be a sensitive topic, we encouraged users to take breaks or reflect on actions they could take before, during, and after sessions for their self-care.

Discovery & Co-Design

Carrying out the research and co-creation workshops enabled our designer to create a prototype based on the ideas shared throughout the workshops and some of the most valued aspects of the sketches.

We presented the design to users and experts so that they could understand the features, interface and functionality. Testing the prototype helped us clearly define the functionality required by our development team to turn the prototype into reality, ready to be deployed online within We Are With You’s architecture.

Prototyping & Testing

Using the visual brand guidelines provided, our designer was able to create a logo for the Timeout Toolkit. Our designer used We Are With You’s primary branding colour and font to ensure the Timeout Toolkit was recognisably the same brand.

Designed with the target audience in mind, the logo design includes plenty of white space to avoid an overwhelming feel, whilst swirling lines add focus and warmth to the calming, blue background.

We worked with We Are With You to identify the best CMS and hosting solutions to meet their needs. We agreed to go ahead with Sanity.io which enables We Are With You to easily customise, manage and update the Timeout Toolkit themselves. We used React for the front end and Vercel for hosting.

We carried out further user testing and quality assurance testing and with another round of iterations - we successfully populated the tool in time to meet their deadline.

 went live on We Are With You’s website. Since going live, we have responded to We Are With You’s request to make a few minor amendments. We successfully changed the header background and updated the ‘Get Help’ button to help triage users to more specific help pages.

Throughout this project, we thoroughly enjoyed working with the team from We Are With You and feel grateful to have worked with a charity that helps so many people. It was great to collaborate with the Thrive by Design team again, and the ideas shared by We Are With You’s users and mental health professionals were essential in helping us create a tool with the end user in mind.

Timeout Toolkit

WorkfromHub

Neal Byers, founder of WorkfromHub, approached us with a vision. As corny as it sounds, our goal was to turn his vision into a reality. To achieve this goal, we started by getting clear on Neal’s vision and in turn, helped Neal’s vision become clearer.

We conducted a Journey Mapping workshop to create a better picture of the type of person who would use the hubs, their requirements, and the ideal journey they would go through - from hearing about the hubs to ending their session in a hub.

Stakeholders and representatives from all areas of the organisation were involved in the discovery process, ensuring decisions were made collaboratively and with a full understanding of everyone’s needs.

Using a range of exercises and activities, our Sketching Workshop helped us gain a clearer understanding of the identity and feel that Neal and his team wanted for WorkfromHub.

Bringing our head of creative, our team, and WorkfromHub's team together for these workshops helped us collaboratively create a solid vision for the future of WorkfromHub.

Workshops

Building the technology around WorkfromHub involved many steps and has provided several insights along the way. We started with something totally new to us - integrating a third-party locking system with an API to ensure that once a user booked a hub, they could securely access and lock it within their selected time slot.

We carried out extensive research into locks and settled upon using Smartlock - a third-party lock integration product. We controlled and integrated the Smartlock using an API that we built in Nest JS.

During the prototype phase of the project, users could view further information and book hubs via a web application that we built using React Native.

With the hubs successfully trialled and the locking system working effectively, we progressed to building a mobile application. We built the app using Expo and integrated it with Stripe so that it could receive payments. You can find the app on the 

In addition to creating a smoother user experience for customers, the app also enables the WorkfromHub team to: add new hubs, make bookings in-house for trialling purposes, change their prices, and provide various offers.

What's Next?

Weston Park Cancer Charity

We started the project with an initial discovery phase to better understand and explore Weston Park Cancer Charity’s users and their requirements.

Using online workshops, user testing and journey mapping we discovered; Weston Park Cancer Charity’s internal structure and stakeholders, the needs of different areas within the charity, the systems and technologies used, their current content and their plans moving forward.

We also gained a deeper understanding of WPCC’s users, learning about their experiences, journeys, needs and the current support provided to WPCC’s service users, fundraisers and donors.

We also spoke to internal users such as website administrators, as well as finance and service providers.

Discovery

To define what content would go on the new site and how it should be grouped, we held workshops with all of the relevant stakeholders and conducted online card sorting with users.

Furthermore, we conducted co-creating and sketching workshops to help us define; the page structures, what features and components to use, and what navigation approaches to use to support all areas of the organisation.

We researched to identify the most effective content management and fundraising options based on the identified needs, structure, and layout required by Weston Park Cancer Charity and its users. This resulted in us providing a comprehensive feature and technical comparison report containing our headline recommendations.

Understanding Weston Park Cancer Charity and its user’s needs remained vitally important throughout the project and we wanted to ensure the design reflected such needs. Collectively, this work allowed us to apply Weston Park Cancer Charity’s brand layout to the prototype from the start.

We chose to create the website using Sanity, a headless CMS, selected for its ability to provide a simple editing experience while supporting the complex, cross-referencing that supports the site structure.

The front end was created in the Next.js framework and we selected Raisely.com for their fundraising platform. As well as being simple to use for donors and fundraisers, Raisely’s ability to connect with or replace some of Weston Park Cancer Charity’s processes and systems can save dozens of hours of admin time each month.

In November 2021, the first phase of Weston Park Cancer Charity’s redesigned website went live in preparation for the busy Christmas period. We’ve now delivered additional features to enhance the website such as a dedicated 

 space, staff profiles and implementing the final pieces of the original designs to support users journeys to the relevant information. We look forwards to continuing to iterate and improve the website through ongoing feedback and user testing.

Throughout this project, we have really enjoyed working with everyone at Weston Park Cancer Charity and their users. We know their work helps so many people in Sheffield and beyond and we are so grateful for the work that they do. Since the site went live, we have been really pleased with the success of the online 

 and events. We were also honoured to be invited to attend the Weston Park Cancer Charity Gala Ball where over £73,000 was raised for the charity.

We feel privileged to work with a charity that makes such a difference to people’s lives and we will be continuing to support and improve their website in an ongoing relationship.

West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership

Thrive by Design are specialists in inclusive co-design and we had the pleasure of experiencing this through working in collaboration with their team on this project.

Constant communication with Thrive by Design ensured we could progress at a fast pace and we cemented a ‘one-team’ ethos very quickly, despite working completely remotely due to the project taking place during a government lockdown.

Facilitation of workshops was interchangeable and the plan for the project was continuously visible to everyone involved throughout.

One thing that we valued in particular throughout working with Thrive by Design was having debriefs following each of the co-design sessions. These covered what we had learned from the session and helped us solidify a plan for our next steps.

Collaboration with Thrive by Design

The main focus of the project involved conducting workshops and interviews with a range of participants who could benefit from the creation of an app. The aim of these sessions was to discover current frustrations when individuals express their communication needs with health and other services.

The co-design workshops enabled a great opportunity for participants to share their own ideas as to how an app could help to reduce existing issues. As a result, this helped us identify and understand the key needs of people on the autism spectrum when accessing health services.

In total 51 people were involved in remote workshops, interviews and user testing sessions and we received 82 survey responses throughout this project. These sessions were extremely insightful, involving a range of activities to capture a range of ideas and thoughts.

Codesign Workshops and Interviews

Following the initial workshops and interviews, we had an internal sketching workshop with the full project team where we shared what we thought the key functions and features for the app could be.

From here, Allan, our designer, built a low-fidelity, black and white, non-branded prototype to help us understand, via user testing, what functionality the app would need without overwhelming potential users with unnecessary complexities.

What was great about conducting user testing on our prototypes throughout the full project was that we continually iterated following feedback. It also enabled the potential users of the app to take ownership of its development by contributing their ideas when interacting with the current version of the prototype. We then started to incorporate colour into the designs once we’d refined the functionality of the app.

Prioritisation of functionality

During the initial workshops, a range of services and industries where an app could be useful were mentioned. For example, one person had never been to a salon before, but had mentioned how an app that served to communicate their needs could unlock the barriers to enable them to feel comfortable visiting a salon.

Therefore, we recruited individuals who represented the key sectors and industries mentioned throughout the initial workshops. By capturing their ideas and feedback, we introduced a range of features and tested the prototype upon a range of scenarios. The prototype went through many iterations with continuous feedback throughout and the final prototype was based upon a scenario involving a user visiting the dentist.

Design of app prototype

Phase two of the project will involve developing a working minimal viable product (MVP) of the app - this means we will be using the app design we created in phase one, and collaborating with Thrive By Design again to create the first working version of the app.

We will start by building the features of the app that are most important in helping people to express their needs. From there we plan to support an initial group of users to use the app and look at how this works for them and the impact that it has on their interactions with services. During this phase we will also be exploring longer term development and the direction of the product as well as ensuring it is safe, compliant and sustainable.

We will continue to work in partnership with West Yorkshire Health and Care partnership and further co-design and test the app with people with living and learnt experience of autism. This is one of the core principles underpinning this work.

We really enjoyed working with Thrive By Design, our collaborative relationship was definitely a contributing factor to the success of the overall delivery of the project. This project provided another great opportunity for us to follow a user-centric design approach through the use of usability testing and periods of design iterations based on the feedback received from participants.

What's next?

My Needs App Prototype

The Message Trust

The timescale for completing the project was challenging as we started in February 2021 and the app needed to be built, released to the app store and ready for use by the start of April 2021.

Collaboration with the Community Grocery team was important for success given the short timescale and this included daily stand-ups to identify requirements, discuss ongoing processes and highlight any challenges or issues we encountered.

We had multiple chats with the Community Grocery to understand their requirements and to capture their ideas. Having got a feel for what the Community Grocery required, we designed and then presented Adobe XD Mock-ups to the Community Grocery. Once the Community Grocery approved our designs, we proceeded to quickly build the app.

Wireframes

Community Grocery uses a customer relationship management system (CRM) called Raiser’s Edge from Blackbaud specifically aimed at the fundraising and charity sector. There was a requirement to store all transactions with the Raiser's Edge CRM as a centralized source of information following data protection guidelines.

An Application Programming Interface (API) for Raiser's Edge is available allowing the App to directly interact with it using existing user accounts maintaining existing permissions and data protection. The API has detailed documentation but has several limitations in functionality and structuring of data which created challenges during the development process which we were successfully able to work around.

We used the open-source platform Expo which builds on React Native’s framework as the basis of the new app. This was particularly useful as it allowed our team to use tools and technologies that we are very familiar with from web development and easily transfer them into a mobile app.

Using Expo simplified the process of building and submitting the app to the Apple App Store. Furthermore, by using Expo and React Native, there is the potential for the app to be released to the Google Play Store for Android devices in the future, should this become a requirement.

To ensure that the Community Grocery team remained part of the development process we released updated versions of the app via TestFlight as features were completed. By using TestFlight, staff members of Community Grocery were able to test new releases and additions and provide rapid feedback. Once an iteration was approved, features would be released and could be used immediately.

Finally we used the monitoring tool Sentry to log and track any issues or crashes users may encounter, this successfully allowed us to identify and report an issue with the Raiser's Edge API and provide an interim solution to minimise its impact.

We successfully delivered the app on time and the app is now used across all Community Grocery stores. Since the development of the app, the Community Grocery now supports over 10,000 families across 13 different stores in the UK.

The completed app is useful to the Community Grocery because it enables them to:

Track who is using the Community Grocery to prevent people from abusing it.

Take notes of any special visits, for example when Christmas gifts are given out.

Collect information on member’s interest in the free courses provided by The Community Grocery.

The app is not available publicly on the app store, but instead is exclusive to the Community Grocery.

The Community Grocery has helped so many individuals and families throughout the Covid-19 global pandemic and we are so pleased that we have been able to work with them. We are excited to continue supporting their in-house development team and any potential future enhancements required of the app.

The Girls’ Day School Trust

We kicked off the project with a collaborative Persona workshop to help identify and prioritise the GDST’s users. User Personas help a product team find the answer to one of their most important questions, “Who are we designing for?”. By understanding the expectations, frustrations and motivations of users, it’s possible to design a service or product that will support users’ needs.

After creating the personas of their prioritised users, user journeys were mapped out to visualise the process an individual user goes through in order to accomplish a goal, including their key motivations, actions and interaction points across the GDST’s digital platforms. This activity enabled us to understand where the GDST may be able to provide a better service for their users, identify existing pain points and capture how users may be feeling at all stages of the journey - allowing us to drive forward recommendations.

Persona and User Journey Mapping

The GDST website underwent a heuristic evaluation which involved reviewing the site’s interface against a set of usability principles to identify where improvement could be made. The analysis consisted of reviewing the usability, structure and content of their competitor’s websites.

Whilst the expert analysis activities took place, we began the recruitment of participants to take part in individual usability testing sessions. The recruitment focused on seeking individuals that matched the GDST’s key users which consisted of: Prospective Parents, Alumnae, Trust and Corporate Partners and New Talent. A total of 19 participants were recruited, unfortunately we were unable to speak to an international parent due to recruitment issues and time zone differences.

Scenarios were created for each user type we tested with to observe how they would interact with the website. During the session we encouraged participants to ‘think aloud’, an effective method of capturing qualitative data to help inform recommendations from a user’s perspective. As all the usability sessions were conducted remotely over video conferencing software, we invited the GDST to silently observe some of the sessions so that they could hear immediate feedback from participants.

Miro, an online whiteboard and visual collaboration tool was used to analyse each of the individual usability sessions. The findings were grouped into themes which helped formulate key recommendations to feedback to the GDST. At this point in the project, we presented the high level findings from the usability sessions to GDST to keep them updated and to answer any questions.

Usability Testing

Following the usability sessions, another workshop was conducted focusing on creating a vision for the GDST’s website. Using this vision and in collaboration with the GDST, we put together a website impact map which provided an efficient method for understanding desired user behaviour and how this relates to GDST’s business goals.
